February 2023 brought a change we never expected. Carlos, in his final semester of medical school, had an international elective to arrange—he narrowed a long list of destinations to a city he didn’t know: Tarija, Bolivia. There, on the steps outside her medical school, Erika noticed a clearly out-of-place student and introduced herself. The next day she invited him to see the Coimata waterfall with “a group of friends”; when everyone else coincidentally canceled, the two of them went together and later called it their first official date. Since then their love has grown through everyday moments and travels around Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico. Now they are excited for their next great adventure: building a life together in the U.S., and celebrating their wedding in Tarija on February 6, 2027.
